Burness “Catfish” Johnson was born on June 5, 1953, in Darlington County. He was the son of the late Harold Lewis and Martha Benjamin Lewis. He received his education in the public schools in the area and graduated from Hartsville Senior High School. “Catfish” as he was affectionately known was employed with Western Auto, Coker Pedigree and Professional Gear until retirement. He was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Ashley Johnson and Belinda Johnson; One son, Mark(Jessica) George; Four siblings, Mary Jane Hunter, Cora (Willie) Pompey, Geraldine (Sammie) Jackson and Tommie (Delois) Johnson; Seven half-sisters five half-brothers, six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Smith Johnson; and three brothers, Robert Lee Benjamin, James Arthur Benjamin and Willie Johnson,Jr.
