Evander Smith born June 27, 1953 in Darlington County, son of the late Tommie Lee Smith Sr. and Vivian Swinney. He was educated in Darlington County public schools and was part of
Rosenwald High School class of 1972. He moved to Baltimore, MD in 1975 where he met the love of his life, his wife of 45 years. While residing in Baltimore, Evander was employed with the Baltimore Envelope Company for many years. Upon his return to South Carolina in 1997, he was employed as a lead man at Galey & Lord for 10 years. When Evander wasn’t working as a mechanic and completing home improvements.
His wonderful life will forever be cherished and remembered in the life of his wife and best friend Leatrice Smith, his daughters who he affectionately loved and adored as “Nessa Ann” (Vanessa Ann Robinson), “Kee” (Kiona Latrice Gibson), and “Denise” (Brittany Denise Smith). His phenomenal son in laws “Son Son (James Robinson), Joel Brown, and Jamar Underdue. His grandchildren Dion Dante’ Gibson Jr. Kion Melvin Gibson, Alfred Holliday IV, Dionte’ Kai”ja Mondowney, Taylor Nicole Mondowney, Armanae’ Leatrice Mack, Mai’lay Evander Mack, James Anthony Robinson Jr. Tamaya Robinson, and Malaysia “Livvie” Bailey. Evander so loved his favorite Aunt Judy Furlow, brother Thomas “Bo” Byrd who affectionately acknowledge Evander as “Squirt”, his god sister Ruth Zimmerman, and godbrother Joseph James. Siblings Geraldine Byrd (Alphonso Byrd), Tommie Lee Smith Jr. (Hannah Smith), Christine McFarland (Michael Williams), Leverne Smith, Veronica Dubose (Wesley Dubose), Vanessa Smith, Gloria King (Sylvester King), and Teresa Jackson. Mother in law Frances Coates, sister in law Veronica Gibson, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Evander was preceded in death by his parents Tommie and Vivian Smith, son Dion Dante’ Gibson Sr., sister Louella Price, father in laws Leroy Gibson and Robert “Yo-Yo” Coates, sister in
laws Doreen Brown, Lavidia Gibson, and brother in law Raymond Gibson.
