Mrs. Hester “Coot” Louise Lee McPhail Freeman was born on May 10, 1933 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, the loving daughter of the late Alonzo McPhail and Rosa Lee Smith. She was called peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, July 19, 2019 at her home. She received her formal education in the Chesterfield County Pubilc Schools. During her early years of living, she worked as a Housekeeper and Nanny for Mrs. Sarah Gainey and as a Home Health Aide for the state of South Carolina. Hester loved her family and friends. She always believed in hugging, kissing, and saying “I love you” rather she was greeting you or saying “see you later”. She didn’t believe in saying Good-bye. She enjoyed always giving a helping hand to those in need. She never met a stranger, in her eyes everyone she met was her family. Her heart was pure, helping her children and grandchildren in whatever ways she could, gave her great Joy.In previous years, Hester attended and became a member of St. Paul Holiness Church under the leadership of Overseer Annie Lou Williamson. Where she was baptized in Jesus’ name.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Alonzo McPhail and Rosa Lee Smith, her grandfather Joseph Lee, her grandmother Rachel Sanders Lee, her brother, Joseph Smith, her husband Garrett Freeman, Jr., her son Garrett Freeman III, and her aunt Mary Lee. Survivors left to cherish her tender memories are her children, Ernest (Lannie) McPhail, Roland (Betty James) McPhail both of Hartsville, SC, Susie (Marian) Wilson of Darlington, SC, Viola Hough of Florence, SC, Alonzo Freeman and Loretta (Kendrick) Harris both of Hartsville, SC, Cabvnough McPhail and Clinton McPhail of Darlington, SC. She was the grandmother of forty-nine grandchildren, 106 great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. Her sister Anna (Teddy) Silva, of Chesterfield, VA, her two brothers Alonzo McPhail and Ronald McPhail both of New York, NY; Her four nieces, Barbara (Cordell) Cherry, Christina Smith, Betty Lankam, Patricia Standsberry and one nephew, Erving (Lydia) Smith; a host of cousins and special friends.
