Ruth Almena Byrd Nickelson was born on May 15, 1928 in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Hendrix and Geneva Mack Byrd. She received her education in the public schools in the area and graduated with the class of 1949 from Butler High School. Furthering her studies in Philadelphia, Ruth inhabited the interest in nursing and began her training. Ruth was employed with various jobs in the area and lastly with Saleeby Center for many years until retirement.
On May 18, 1953 Ruth married the love of her life, William G. “Nick” Nickelson, Sr. and to this union, three children were born, Schyler, William and Kathy. Ruth was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the Gospel Choir and Missionary Society. Helping others and showing a genuine love for those was indeed one of her many gifts. Her sweet spirit was exhibited in her timeless efforts participating with the Helping Hand club and as a Volunteer with Carolina Pines and Byerly Hospital. When one is a true woman of virtue, she possesses a love for her family and devotion for those she loves dearly and meets along this journey we call –Life. As her journey continued, Ruth enriched the lives and fellow residents and staff of both Morningside of Hartsville and Scottish Pines Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Laurinburg.
Those left to carry her legacy are her children, Schyler N. (Jimmy) Wolfe of Pembroke Pines, FL, William G. (Ella) Nickelson, Jr. and Kathy N. Wright both of Laurinburg, NC; One sister, Janie Mae (James) Woodham of Hartsville, SC; Three grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a host of many nieces, nephews and close relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hendrix and Geneva Mack Byrd, her loving husband, William G. Nickelson, Sr., Her siblings, Mamie Byrd, Parry Byrd, Youngs “Bummy” Byrd, Harold “Mut” Byrd, Sr., Ernest Byrd, Leo Byrd and Levern Byrd.
